Brain research has found that students need physical exercise to help create more brain cells. More brain cells means more learning opportunities for our students who are already behind due to the pandemic. By providing these wobble chairs and different types of playground equipment, you are giving my students an opportunity to move more in the classroom and during short brain breaks. Health standard 1.NP.2.2 wants students to understand that physical activity can have benefits to their health. Standard 7.SM.2.1 wants students to understand that a variety of healthy practices can lead to improved health. Finally standard 7.SM.2.2 wants students to demonstrate behaviors that can avoid health risks. Movement and physical activity both inside and outside of the classroom provides students opportunities to experience healthy practices that can lead to a healthier lifestyle. The products I have selected will give the students in my classroom who cannot sit still an opportunity to move subtly while not distracting others around them. They will be able to focus better on their work when they have the chance to move around and get their wiggles out. What I've seen with my students returning back to school after distance learning, is that they have an even harder time focusing for longer periods of time and sitting still. Giving periodic brain breaks to students outside will allow them the opportunity to move around even more. Using playground equipment to encourage group games promotes cooperation and communication. Jumping rope gets the heart rate up. After our heart rate is up at an optimal level for a short period of time, our brains learn more. I can use hula hoops to encourage cooperative learning through various games. These outside activities will help students make the connections between physical activity and our health standards.
