As a first year teacher, my first grade classroom is lacking most of the resources that an ideal classroom needs to encourage literacy skills. As English Language Learners, my students are eager to learn in two languages and are full of curiosity. This excitement about reading has created a true love in our classroom for reading and a need for more Spanish books to develop their overall linguistic proficiency in their first language. Leveled books in a classroom library are necessary in order to get our students to their expected reading level. Most of my students are not familiar with paper books and are used to only clicking on a screen to read. Printed books have been known to improve comprehension levels and serve as a significant influence on a child’s worldview and approach to learning.
