Most Orchestra programs have students choose between four instruments for their stringed instrument education; the violin, viola, cello, and double bass. My program has grown in size over the last three years. This wonderful development has led to a shortage in instrument stock, particularly for violas. Being a violist myself, I sell the instrument to my students by explaining how the viola is the heart of the Orchestra. They sit in the middle of the entire ensemble and use their darker and mellow harmonies to bring all of the other instrument sections together musically. Without violas, there is a noticeable visual and aural hole in Orchestral music. With these violas purchased through the program, I am able to provide more students with the opportunity to learn more about this wonderful instrument and its unique position in music. Violists learn deeply about harmonies and the inner workings of larger musical pieces in large part because they always in the middle of the music itself. Viola students also learn to read alto clef, which is a clef of music designed only for them and is not taught to any other musical instrument in the middle school curriculum. A strong viola section both in quality and quantity elevates the music of the ensemble to a more full and impactful sound as it connects the ranges of violins to the voices of cello and bass. Violas turn islands of other instruments into one fully formed ensemble.
