Research shows that time spent independently reading at a student's independent reading level or slightly above increases reading fluency and reading comprehension. If a student self selects a text that they find interesting they are more engaged which results in improved focus and time on task. With multiple levels of texts in my classroom, I can lead a reader's workshop where students work on the same literary objectives but with different texts. This leads to lots of class discussion and an increased appreciation for literature and the act of reading.
