These materials will provide culturally relevant reading materials to increase their love for reading and an inviting place to read them. Research shows that students are more likely to be engaged in independent reading when they have access to culturally relevant text (Freeman & Freeman, 2004). These books will also be used for read alouds with discussion to foster connections between themselves and the book and each other. By giving my students books about people who are similar as well as different than they are, we have a chance to build empathy and build a community of learners. By providing a comfortable place with two flex space bundles to sit with stories and pictures that reflects their culture, I hope to inspire my students to read and dream of a great future.
