Because this is an artist studio, it's important that my students have the right equipment for the job. It's my goal to give them the tools they need to be successful, but also to support their mental and physical well-being now that they are back in school. The use of easels allows work to be viewed from the angle it is intended to be displayed while painting. More importantly, easels support flexible seating for art class, giving students the opportunity to move more freely and have better posture. Students who engage in creating art build self-awareness, empathy, patience, and relationship skills. Student social skills and emotional well-being have been topics of particular concern over the last two years, when students spent much of their time learning in isolation and hunched over a computer screen. The arts are a crucial part of our physical return to the classroom by supporting student social emotional learning (SEL). Now that we are back in the classroom, my students are excited to be in an environment that supports relationships with teachers and peers, and to feel like an artist with real artist tools (in contrast to what was available to them digitally). If funded, easels will be used to complete art daily in class, and will also be used to display their artwork, highlighting student successes and learning. This goal is aligned to the National Core Visual Arts Standards VA:Cr2.3, VA:Cr1.2.HSII, and VA:Pr5.1.HSI. These specific standards connect to Creating and Presenting anchor standards and relate to the use of materials and artistic practices to create an artwork, and also to ways an art exhibition is displayed.
