This project will provide my students with items that will be used to supplement their literacy and life skills (self-help) curriculum. The Resource Tactile/Object library will be available for schoolwide use, but primary for the K-3 grade level. Studies have shown that providing students with a variety of means to communicate including tactile, olfactory and object enhances both literary and verbal comprehension. In order to have an environment that has been enriched to meet these communication methods a variety of materials are needed. The creation of a tactile/object resource library will allow our educators to utilize a variety of support materials to enhance literacy opportunities, expressive and receptive communication skills and engagement of students. The resource library will be stocked with supplies such like a variety of food items and scents to support nutrition and science lessons. Other objects such as butterflies, nets, and seedlings could be used to communicate lessons regarding spring, lifecycles, science lessons, and literacy engagements with books for those with a variety of communication needs. The items purchased for this library will facilitate classroom discussions, peer-to-peer interactions, and build socially acceptable behaviors while also addressing educational plans and curriculum needs, thus closing the gap between students with disabilities and their grade level peers.
