It's no secret that our students were not able to learn to their fullest potential during the COVID shut down and into distance learning. Many of the third grade students haven't been in a class room since first grade. As a result they have fallen behind in their reading skills. Storyworks incorporates all of the Nevada Academic Content Standards in reading (RL3.1-RL-3.10; RI3.1-RI3.10) as well as incorporating written responses to the text; W3.7-8. This year our third graders scored low in reading informational text. In utilizing Storyworks we can offer more engaging texts to the students as well as a digital component to activate their learning. Struggling readers usually go to books and magazines with pictures as the visuals are less intimidating than a chapter book. Storyworks provide those pictures and visuals students need to understand the text they are reading. We want to build better readers and make reading informational text fun and engaging. Reading informational text introduces more content to the students through Social Studies, Health and Science, sparking more interest. Integrating these interests will help even the reluctant reader find reading fun and begin to read for enjoyment!
