The world and school has been a roller-coaster ride for my 5th graders. They have felt every emotion from fear, sadness, dismay and many others. We are now in class with strict social distancing guidelines. Many of them are behind because their home life was not very conducive for learning or they chose not to during distance learning last year. It's an uphill battle for me but I am excited for the challenge and to make a difference in these kids lives. There is no better way to help students with reading and dealing with life than to immerse them in authentic literature with characters they can relate to. In order to keep covid guidelines, each student needs their own book so they don't have to share. This will also benefit them if we are forced into distance learning again because they can take the book home. We will read and discuss these books as a class. I will teach several standards with these books through the unit plans I will purchase on TPT. For example, The War that Saved My Life is about a young girl during WW2, it takes us through her heartaches but also her triumphs. Through this book I will use it cross curricular, teaching about WW2 as well as reading skills, comprehension and vocabulary. Some of the standards taught would be L.5.5, L.5.4, L.5.3, RL.5.1, RL.5.2, RL.5.3, RL.5.4 and many more. Another important point is that these kids can make text-to-self connections with not only this character but also with the characters in the other books I'm requesting. Through literature I can not only increase their desire to read but also give them skills to deal with life.
