There are a couple of projects that I have been wanting to bring to the students to keep them excited being back in the classroom, but I just don't have the materials for yet. After distance learning for so long, my students have been craving hands on, group projects where we can learn about social studies together. They have hit their limit on articles, videos, and online quizzes! One lesson that I want my middle school students to work on is with populations of different areas. When I just tell them numbers it can be hard to grasp for them, but if we can build and construct the populations of different areas, countries, and even the world into towers, the visual will be way more powerful. Although I have tried it with different materials, the ability of the LEGO bricks to hold together will make the project easier for them and then we will be able to reuse them in different areas of the world. A second lesson that I think they'll enjoy is creating a papier-mâché globe. With the oil paints and brushes, we'll be able to customize each globe based off of the different factors: whether it's governments, populations, cultures, or a dozen other identifiers.
