Students need to feel connected to their learning. Multicultural literature creates the opportunity not only for students to learn more about their own cultures, but to learn about the cultures and experiences of their classmates as well. This will cultivate a diverse community based upon empathy and respect. It is so important to create an educational experience that values differences in the classroom and supports social-emotional learning. I plan to use these books to start a powerful dialogue about the world around us and for students to explore independently as well.
