Adaptive equipment and sensory motor materials will enable students with physical, neurodevelopmental and sensory challenges to more easily participate in educational activities throughout the school day. Fine motor fidgets, seat cushions, slant boards, pencil grips, cause/effect switches and toys, sensory materials and adaptive toys are all examples of materials which will facilitate inclusion of students in classroom learning opportunities and socialization. Activities that students will be able to participate in include morning meeting, learning centers (fine motor, art, dramatic play), instructional tasks (math, reading, science, social studies) snack/lunch, recess, art, music and gym. Alternative seating can provide additional external support for students with atypical muscle tone, poor trunk strength or poor muscular endurance. It can also facilitate improved attention and self regulation for students that have difficulty staying seated for long periods of time. Disco Sit cushions are filled with air and allow students the ability to move while still remaining seated in a chair. Due to the current pandemic and the resulting inconsistency of in-person learning, students have not been able to maintain their neurodevelopmental readiness for learning. With access to multiple types of equipment and supplies, students will be able to improve postural control and self-regulation for improved sustained attention to task during structured learning activities.
