For this unit, students will be exploring issues of social justice across time, space, issues and genres. We will start by reading Trevor Noah's book Born a Crime. We will then watch the movie Sarafina. Our discussion will center on the impact of Apartheid on South Africa and how children help the resistance. We will then be reading multiple poems from Margarita Engle's Dreams from Many Rivers, exploring the Hispanic experience in North America. Next, students will be reading The Laramie Project. After reading the script and watching the movie, students will participate in a workshop with the Tectonic Theater to explore the creation of non-fiction literary pieces based on interviews and real-life events. From there, we will be reading Laura Bate's The Burning that explores the similarities in slut shaming and witch trials. The final project of students will be the design of their own literary piece (prose, poetry, drama) based on an experience in their lives. I am asking for a class set of two books: Born a Crime and The Burning so my students can have their own copies to read and react to.
