I am a technology and computer science teacher who works with a diverse group of students, some of who have grown up with opportunities to make and design, and others who have never been able to think of themselves as creators. In my project-based classroom, we create everyday. I teach my students to use 3D modeling software, we engineer solutions to real world problems, we code video games, and sometimes we need to make parts for our designs on our 3D printers. My students will benefit from these 3D printer parts because they will be able to touch the designs that they have created digitally, and see how manufacturing allows engineering to come to life. Right now we have 7 3D printers in our classroom with only two functioning extruders (you can think of an extruder like a printer cartridge on a regular printer). I am currently spending more time troubleshooting old and broken extruders than I am developing new and exciting ways for my students to design, and I'd love to get back to teaching instead!
