This fall I took a poll and out of my 6 PE classes 70% of students that currently hunt or would like to get back into hunting. Knowing the community's strong love for the outdoors and hunting, I would like to 3-D targets to our units. These would be the type of targets that students would be hunting and I believe having a proper education about the animals is very important. With practice, archers can learn to not get emotional when they make a bad shot. Instead of attaching their self-worth to performance, they will learn to analyze their shots with a calm mind and improve in the next rounds. Archers not only need physical strength, but also mental strength. Just by practicing archery, young archers will learn patience, focus, and self-motivation. Archers need significant stamina and upper body and core strength to pull the bow and keep the bow steady while aiming. Archery offers great satisfaction in combining both physical and mental skills. Those are good reasons to practice on a 3-D deer target. Unlike a bull’s-eye target, where the aiming point is easily identified, the aiming point on a whitetail varies. The deer’s position relative to the hunter changes, so the aiming point for a lethal shot varies, too. Not all kids like team sports. Individual sports such as archery may give these kids a place to shine. Being in a position to pull back the string and put an arrow into the target will surely give a child a great sense of accomplishment.
