Hands on art fosters growth in young minds. So teaching ceramics has been a very rewarding profession. However, our ceramics classes are in desperate need of a new kiln. We usually have three and are currently down to one that is barely working. Ceramics classes would be virtually impossible to offer without the use of a working kiln. They are expensive and usually last many years, so this would serve hundreds of students every year. My students enjoy ceramics as a release of their day to day struggles. Our demographic of students are the type of students that are caring, thoughtful, and artistic. However, many are not as fortunate as others and the vast majority work after school jobs to help out financially at home or watch their little brothers and sisters. I think this makes them appreciate being able to get their hands dirty and create some beautiful art.
