I would like to create a visual, hands-on space for my ASD learners to interact with all year long. Research continues to show that being involved physically will enhance the entire learning process and create the memory tracks for recall. Our students specifically have goals with interpersonal learning. They will learn the skills to work together in a different light on a year long project, while learning together. I will set up classroom jobs to help maintain our garden. These types of jobs can nurture our learners for real world opportunities that will arise. My hope is for them to find peace in nature as a calming strategy to match our calm classroom curriculum. For the academic piece, they will be growing fruits and vegetables and planting a variety of milkweed and flowers to watch full life cycles. The students will interact with the garden daily to monitor progress and collect data. They will also be connecting with nature as a calming strategy when rises in behavior occur. This will cover many of the science and nutrition standards like life cycles, forms of energy, the structure of living things, the nature of matter, weather, importance of pollinators, and the scientific method. I plan to continue to using the garden every year I teach. I usually loop years with my students, so they will also be able to compare and contrast multiple years of growing patterns. 50% of students will increase their grade in science during the 2021-2022 school year by pre and post tests. They will also be assessed by the 5th grade Florida Standardized Science test each year. 80% of students will show a decrease in behavior on their FBA's during the 2021-2022 school year.
