A nice collection of new library books will go a long way with high school students. All 9th and 10th graders in my school are required to read a book of their choice each semester. My goal is to find students a book they can really get into and hopefully become life-long readers. High school students are some of the toughest nuts to crack when it comes to reading. They are busy with school, getting prepared for college, jobs, relationships, etc. The best way to get them reading is finding books on a topic they are interested in and can relate to. Easier said than done at times! It's even harder when there aren't enough interesting books to go around. My library's collection is sparse, and with no funding coming from the district, it's near impossible to reach my goal.
