Lexington Senior High School is a feeder school for the entire district of Lexington City Schools, which is set in a community that has its economic challenges. Lexington, NC according to the Census Bureau reports, is considered an area with extremely high poverty rates. Subsequently, it could be considered, based on this factor alone, that students enrolled at Lexington Senior High school have limited access to resources beyond the traditional activities i.e. sports. However, not everyone can afford or have access to sports due to limited transportation. Covid 19 has only intensified the condition of poverty because students had no outlet. The situations and environments the students abide in due to the increase of pressure. This pressure has translated into social and emotional by products that affect how students cope or have difficulty doing. So you asked the question, why Yoga. Originating in India, Yoga combines physical, mental, and spiritual practices that allow an individual to develop or retain health, happiness, sense of self-awareness, and higher consciousness, wholeness. If granted the funding to purchase yoga mats as a certified yoga teacher of yoga I can create a program within the school that can be beneficial to both staff and students, starting their day off on a positive note. Providing this service could benefit not just the average person, but those who participate in sports, helping athletes to become centered mentally as well as to prepare their bodies physically for the challenges of their sport. Yoga would not just be something to prepare for a big game, but a tool for those who partake, it could become a way of life, a tool that they could use the rest of their life.
