Many students receiving special education services think and act differently compared to their grade-level peers. For example, some students require ongoing sensory stimulation to maintain focus (e.g., tapping a pen or jiggling their leg). My students need help in developing coping strategies to be able to work with their peers and succeed in their classes. Within one classroom, I have three students making noises, one student attempting to wander around the room, 10 students asking questions or commenting on the lesson at inopportune times, and another 10 students attempting to maintain focus. Like a pair of glasses to improve one's eyesight, a bouncy chair or spinner ring can provide silent stimulation, allowing students to curb distracting behaviors without leaving the general education setting. By donating to this project, you will help my students to increase their participation in class, to engage with their teachers and peers without distracting themselves or others, and to complete their classwork independently. I will use the fidget spinner rings and yoga ball chair with my active students, creating a calmer and quieter place to learn for all students (and teachers) in the classroom.
