I am a big proponent on students working together to meet their goals, while also having fun! First graders are always ready to lend a helping hand to those who need it and this even applies to their learning. They are also in an age where movement is necessary! This is my first ever DonorsChoose project, and I want to focus on flexible seating for my first graders as well as provide an environment where they can work with me safely, whether it is during a pandemic or not! The kidney table is essential when working with small groups because it allows all students to be in one place comfortably, which helps when collaborating and sharing their thoughts! It is a place where they are expected to work together to meet their goal, with me guiding them there! This table allows me to fit them the required distance during this pandemic, while still allowing students to have fun while working together. My goal is to have my classroom 100% flexible seating, and I've decided to start with the two seats for a reading center. I want my students to foster their love of books in a comfortable setting. As I stated before, my first graders love to work together, but they also love to move and explore while working. I truly believe having a flexible seating option available to them will be beneficial. In allowing them to have their own choice of seating that isn't in a hard plastic chair, their bodies and minds will be able to work to its true potential!
