We all know that basic needs must be met before we can focus on the other challenges of our day. Most of my students are returning to in person learning every day for the first time since March of 2019. They have had access to snacks when they need them. Returning to the structure of being in school can be a challenge. They are unable to reach for a snack when they need one. Add to that a change in our school's hours resulting in arrival almost an hour and a half later than their previous years, eating lunch much later and a later dismissal. Providing snacks for my students will help them stay focused on school, satisfy hunger and boost energy. COVID-19 safety precautions present a challenge to snacking in the classroom. Snack time will also serve as a mask and brain break. Weather permitting, our class can walk outside, enjoy the fresh air, stretch, and eat their snacks. They would truly be "food for thought".
