My students have many individual special needs and sensory issues that make it challenging for them to stay focused and do their work. Staying in their seats and getting out their energy at the same time is crucial to their ability to concentrate on and complete their work. Research has also linked physical activity to higher academic performance. Supplying wobble stools and wiggle cushions will help my students succeed by allowing them to wiggle while they work and help make learning more fun. Children need to be comfortable and at ease to stay engaged in learning. When students with sensory issues can wiggle and move, they are more comfortable and better able to focus and concentrate. Allowing students to move while they work increases oxygen flow to the brain, increases blood flow, and helps keep young minds active and alert. Additionally, coming to resource class can have a negative stigma and some students dread having to come to a different room for their special interventions. Having an inviting classroom with fun and flexible seating options helps to create a better atmosphere so students will want to come and receive the assistance they need.
