My 5th grade students have all lost so much in the past two years. They have lost family members, parents have lost jobs, and kids are thinking about what they will lose next. Providing students with with items they can earn when they learn, they will stay motivated to continue to learn so they can earn back some possessions for themselves. Additionally, teaching the kids about perseverence helps the students understand that sometimes things happen, but if we don't give up, we will all make it through this process together.
