English learners face many challenges in the typical classroom. One of the biggest challenges is having the vocabulary needed to participate in classroom activities. One way I help my English learners is to help them create a personal picture dictionary. By printing pictures and labeling important vocabulary, my students are able to learn and participate in class discussions along with their classmates. This is crucial for creating a feeling of belonging in the school community. With visual support of vocabulary, students can feel confident and participate more fully in class discussions. Having a working printer in our classroom would make this immensely successful.
