It has been shown that if students read for just 10 minutes each day, they can move up to the 70th percentile in their reading assessments. Some of the best "teaching moments" that I have experienced in my years of teaching have been watching students who identify themselves as "non-readers" find and finish a good book. When students know that their teachers care about them as students, readers, and humans they will succeed. Being able to hand a student a good book while they are in class next to me is the most successful way to get a kid hooked. In my classes students read each day. I hold reading conferences with them regularly to keep track of the progress and struggles and interests. Each quarter they create some sort of advertisement for a book. The first quarter students will write a book review in Destiny, our library catalog. In the second quarter they will present a book review in Flipgrid. Third quarter students will create a one-pager with art work and important details from their books. Students will get to choose a project for the fourth quarter. Many standards are addressed in these projects: RL6/7 or RI.2-4; RL or RI6/7.10; W6/7.1-2; 6/7.4-6; 6/7.10; SL6/7.4-6; L6/7.1-3; 6/7.4a; 6/7.6. When my students find a good book they will take the book home and devour it. Please let me help the experience the joy of being lost in a book!
