Our unique population is in need of daily counseling and daily communication with their residential staff. Our teaching staff can improve this communication by documenting the students’ struggles in real time. School staff and students meet in a separate area (counseling room) during this time away from the classroom. Tablets would allow the staff to access a checklist for conducting a life-space interview (a required component of such counseling) before the student returns to class. Staff could also update the student’s time out of class log so that all staff members responsible for the student are aware of their progress in real time. This is far preferable to waiting until the end of the school day. It will allow the data collected to be far more accurate and thorough than trying to recall what has happened by the end of the day. The importance of accurate and consistent communication is essential to ensure success for our students. The data gathering allowed by this real-time data collection will allow the school administration to provide teams with the support they need for their classrooms and school teams to succeed. This data can also be used in professional development to review and assess program goals and successes and provide targeted solutions for each student.
