We have all dreaded the assigned book - one that is often teacher chosen and 100 years old. As much as I love the classics and still share them with my students, I believe the true power of reading comes to life when students choose what they read. And I have seen this power create discussion leaders, artists and lifelong readers. Building a robust classroom library is a constant joy and struggle. Once students engage with the library - they are always seeking out the next book. Manga is extremely popular with all of my students and for different reasons. Some are drawn to the story arc - often with complex character histories. Some love the energy of the graphics. And some appreciate the young protagonists battling their way in a universe created by imagination. It is not light reading; which we see when students delve into the themes during discussion groups and in their journals. Shared readings allow each student to bring their story to our attention and we share a laugh, a shudder or sometimes a sad sigh. We build trust with each other and work to communicate through all these wonderful moments.
