My gifted classroom consists of elementary school-age children from five area elementary schools set in a rural WV setting. Both boys and girls are represented as well as a blending of diverse socioeconomic status. Each week we explore and inquire about current events and issues in our area and globally. Our topics range from inquiry that involves using natural resources to organically filter water to using electromagnets as an alternate source of power. Trying to create a classroom built for group and individual exploration has been a challenge as far as finding funding for projects. I have involved the students in the process of planning projects to be funded by DonorsChoose, which gives them some autonomy in the planning process.
