Freshmen students in my foundations of science classes will be taking waste oils from a variety of sources--kitchens to cars--and transforming them into clean biodiesel fuel through the chemical reaction of esterification. These reagents for this reaction are very corrosive, therefore I am hoping to provide my class with higher quality glass equipment that will last many years after they have been purchased. This experiment will be performed in the supervised classroom laboratory with appropriate techniques and safety instruction. There is a certain excitement is generated in performing tasks that require more attention to technique and safety, feeling that the task is somehow a more authentic activity.
