Art boards are used regularly in the art studio to allow students to "stretch" their art paper. Taping art paper such as watercolor paper to a board for student use allows for a portable work surface in which students can store artwork from class period to class period without needing to remove their work from a work surface at the end of each class session. Having enough art boards for each student to use will allow for less set up and clean up time each class period, which in turn increases the time available for creating their art.
