I am a special education teacher currently in the process of starting a new life skills /vocational program for middle school students with Autism. The idea for this project is to teach students day to day life skill needs and expose them to fundamentals of vocational skills. Some examples of life skills : Making the bed, setting the table, washing dishes, doing the laundry, folding, organizing a bedroom ( mock bedroom) taking care of a pet, hygiene, meal prep etc. Some examples of fundamental vocational skills: Working at a grocery store, stocking items, cashier, bagging, completing a shopping list (especially now with online orders), working in a clothing store ( pop up in classroom) putting items on shelves, working in a fast food store ( pop up in classroom) etc. The projected goal for this year is to expose the students to a need that will help them becomes successful individuals.
