Children with special needs, especially those non-verbal students with autism, often require specially created environments created to provide an immersive sensory calming effect that reduces anxiety and improves focus. Such sensory adaptation and proprioceptive input can properly regulate student behavior. Sensory items such as a textured balance beam, a weighted shoulder rest, liquid floor tiles, and gell-filled sensory shapes provide the calming input students require when stressed or overstimulated. A sensory (therapeutic) space within our classroom will provide students with personalized sensory input which helps calm them and allows them to regain focus, which once redirected, allows them to learn and interact with others.
