I am requesting sensory items for my classroom. Many of my students struggle with expressing and regulating their emotions, and this has only increased since the pandemic has started. Sensory toys such as, sensory tubes and texture items help my students be able to function better even when emotions are overwhelming for them. My students are aware that the toys in the classroom lack diversity and don't represent them or any student for that matter with a disability. Even at the young age that my students are, they still have been bullied and many understand that they are different than those around them. I am requesting money so that I can buy more toys, and books to highlight their disabilities in a way that is inclusive. There is so much to be learned from being able to see that a disability doesn't make you "bad", but that it is a good part of who you are. With the severity of disabilities that I have in my classroom, and the title one area that I teach in I also am wanting to add items such as dolls, and play food from other cultures so that all of my students are represented in many different ways through play, and the materials that they interact with. I would love for my students to be able to be represented and have the opportunity to be able to use materials that are inclusive of them.
