As a STEM academy, Liberty Junior High strives to help our learners make connections between the literature they are reading and real-world solutions. With the help of this book, The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind, our students will experience the celebrations and the struggles of young inventors. And because of our diverse community, many will be able to connect this novel about a young teen from Malawi, Africa with experiences of their own. By exploring the life of William Kamkwamba through literature, the students in our 7th-grade science and humanities classes will see what they are learning in science come to life and watch as a boy their age starts and stumbles and creates his way to greatness. This will allow them to envision themselves as young scientists too. By teaching this text through both the science and humanities classes, that cross-curricular connection will become even stronger.
