Our Calm Down Corner will be a special area in our classroom to provide students with a place to consider their emotions and choose from a variety of materials in a safe space to help them go from a state of fear, anger, or sadness into a state of calm and security so that they are able to fully engage in learning with our class family.
Upset students will be able to visit the calm down corner and have a weighted lap blanket as they use have a quiet "chat" with an emotions buddy or use the breathing ball during their calming breaths or other fidget toys for some calm down care.
They will also be able to put their "icon" in the pocket that describes their emotion by picture and move it as it changes. This area will be a place where they may feel safe and comforted as they learn to disengage stress and move to a place of readiness to rejoin the class.
This will be a place where EVERY student may learn and grow socially and emotionally (which also undergirds strong academic growth) and will help in building a positive, healthy classroom and school environment.
