My students will use these books as an example of great literature to help foster a desire to love reading. The Caldecott Medal is for great picture book literature. Students will read the selected books and write persuasive essays outlining which book they think should win and why they think it is a great book. As they read the books, we will narrow down our choices and continue to vote and write about the ones we think should win. As a culmination of our project, we will watch the actual Caldecott Awards Ceremony from the American Library Association to see if our choice won. Students will then get to keep a book of their own to share with their family and help them remember this impactful experience with literature.
