Comfortable seating in the school counselor’s office will offer students the opportunity to relax and express themselves in an environment that’s more conducive for therapy. I meet with multiple students daily to address a plethora of social emotional concerns. Students’ concerns include but are not limited to depression, bullying, separation anxiety, and grief. When students visit my office, they currently must sit on a $25.00 loveseat that I purchased from Goodwill a few years back. Although this sofa has been disinfected and covered with a slipcover for added protection, unfortunately, the fabric underneath the cover is peeling and leaves a mess on the floor following each counseling session. In addition, any student experiencing a specific, obsessive-compulsive disorder quickly identifies the shedding couch if the slipcover is out of place and is unable to control the impulse to pick at the fabric. Students who are able to sit and speak with the counselor in a clean and comfortable environment feel the freedom to genuinely express themselves. Consequently, the counselor is better able to address the social emotional needs of those students who require support. I am requesting this particular item because it will be an added incentive for students to feel comfortable and genuinely share concerns they may be facing. The loveseat will fit perfectly in my small office space and students will no longer have to focus on the shavings all over the floor after shifting around a few times as they do with the existing couch. Please help me assist teachers in meeting the academic needs of all learners by properly addressing the social emotional concerns in a clean and comfy environment.
