Dr. Rudine Sims Bishop wrote about the importance of providing literature that allows children to see themselves and their world. Materials for this project will take that literature and extend it for my students by providing engaging ways to interact with the text like using finger lights to track print or the eyes to focus on specific words, by allowing them to hear pre recorded stories being read to them that many are not yet able to read independently, having story response activities specifically designed by teachers from an engaged readers resource on (TPT) directly connected to curriculum like retelling, sentence structure, and opinion writing, and allowing students to demonstrate understanding through interactive play and manipulating tangible items like characters and setting pieces printed from a digital TPT resource to create their own version of story details. The digital TPT resources and audio versions of the stories can be used in the classroom as well as at home if need be. Clip boards provide a surface for my students to work anywhere in the room and are easily store in their own personal spaces. The "mirrors, windows and sliding glass doors" draw my students into great literature. Not a single one of my students has been in outer space but to be able to build your own rocket using magnetic tiles after listening to a story about someone who has and imagining the sights and sounds draws readers into the language and knowledge of an experience unfamiliar to them. Finding those word patterns can be tricky for beginning readers, but to find the words in the same story that just encouraged you to build a barn from magnetic tiles to fit the animals on the farm you planned is way more fun!
