It's here! Come look!!\" Oh, how I wish you could have seen and heard how genuinely excited all 18 kindergarteners were when we started off the last week of October with our new learning space! Students instantly noticed how much bigger each designated space is, how calming (and less distracting) the colors are, and how comfortable and clean it is! Our first morning meeting felt like Christmas morning--everyone was happy and felt so comfortable. Every morning, we start by making a \"circle\" (technically a wonky ovular rectangle, ha!) around the edge of the rug for our morning meeting greeting, sharing, and activity. Throughout the day, you will find us on the rug during our number corner lesson (calendar and math activities), portions of core literacy and math instruction, social learning time, target time stations, independent reading, guidance lessons, and more! While students also learn and work at their table spots and by the smartboard, the rug is certainly our home base.\r\n\r\nWe transitioned to wearing slippers (or Crocs) in the classroom in an effort to keep our new rug clean and dry, which greatly contributes to the new coziness that our classroom has. The students instantly became \"protectors\" of our new rug, asking visitors to make sure their shoes are dry and clean or to kindly walk around it. The deep pride coming from these 5- and 6-year-olds to contribute to the longevity of our classroom's new central space filled my heart to the brim! \r\n\r\nIn any kindergarten classroom, a rug is never \"just\" a rug. It's a calm and welcoming space where everyone belongs, friendships are formed, problems are solved, and knowledge grows by the minute. This was my very first Donors Choose project, and it was a big one! The incredible support it received and being fully funded so quickly honestly brought (happy) tears to my eyes.\r\n\r\n\"Thank you!\" will never be enough to properly show my appreciation for your support of my young learners! They were very excited when it arrived and agree to open the box immediately! They attempted sewing just this year so wanted to try that with our own machine and learn how to use the embroidery feature. \r\nOne of my students had out the manual for three days to learn how to use the embroidery part of the machine. She wanted to see if she could get it figured out. I love her perseverance! I helped at the very end and we tried three different embroidery options so far. Her next project is to make a pillow and then embroider onto it. \r\nI have another group of students starting projects now too, inspired by seeing the machine and what it can do.
