There's a quote that says, "We lose ourselves in books, we find ourselves there too." If we never see ourselves in the content that we read about or learn about, then we are always getting lost in someone else's reality; is it really ever possible to find ourselves without seeing ourselves? These materials will deepen my students' love for reading. Every day, and each night for homework, students read for 20 minutes. The time they use to read will be worth it if they are really into the books and experiences they read about! The books I chose are at all different levels, in order to cater to the needs of each of my students. They are individuals who need different supports and different approaches. As their teacher, I strive to serve them by affirming them, showing them new ways and strategies of doing things, and challenging them. These materials in many ways affirm their identities as people of color who read, go on adventures, write, are mathematicians, lead and enjoy the life they choose to live. It's so important that they can see this at such a young age; it set's the precedent for their lives in the future.
