Every student in speech therapy has their specific goals, written into a special education document called the IEP. I write those myself, after evaluating a student, getting to know them, and selecting the skills they will work on in speech. Then, my challenge is to design dynamic speech therapy sessions for 50 children with 50 different sets of goals! Goals include things like: answering comprehension questions about a story, using a picture communication system to make comments and ask for things you need, sequencing events in a process or story, becoming a more confident speaker while embracing stuttering, defining words, producing a certain sounds, following verbal directions, comparing and contrasting, and the list goes on! My goal is to empower my students by giving them the gift of confident communication. I teach them that their ideas matter, and I want their words to match the strength of their hearts and minds.
