The world needs future bryologists! Mosses, liverworts, and lichens are fascinating but, perplexingly, it seems hard to get teenagers hooked (maybe because of terms like "liverwort"). I have been designing a project for my environmental studies students where they study the biological diversity and ecological services provided by cryptobiotic soils. The fine details of these are too hard to really make out clearly with the naked eye, but they're too large for traditional microscopes. These desktop digital microscopes I'm asking for look like the perfect fit! They can connect to my students' chromebook via a USB port, so instead of 2 or more students waiting for their turn to look through one eyepiece, they can all see what's being viewed on their computer screens! Not only that, but they can capture high resolution pictures and videos. The sky is the limit with how many projects these digital microscopes could be used for. I'm hoping to get funding for one 'scope for every 2 students (36 students total). Thank you all for your consideration. -Jason Roback Science teacher Sandia High School Albuquerque, New Mexico
