The program that my students are a part of is basically one of their last chances to be able to graduate with their cohort. The regular classroom is not for a lot of them, as well as all the extra responsibilities that have been put on them at such a young age. Almost all of my students work. Most of them are working to help provide for their families, whether it be their own children, siblings or parents. Some students have children and/or pregnant. A regular classroom does not meet the needs of these students all the time. Some come in right after working all night long and staying at school all day won't give them the opportunity rest and be ready to go for another long night of work. Some of them sleep through the first half of the day and then come to get some work done in class, then leave to go to their jobs. Some of my students are dealing with having a child or currently pregnant. They want to graduate a receive a diploma, but a full day of school is also not conducive to raising a child. I want for my classroom to be a place of comfort for them. Where they get to concentrate on themselves and work to better their future.
