In our classroom literary societies we break into small groups and the students are provided books that have a common theme or SEL lesson. They read the same novel in their small groups and discuss the progression of the story and it's characters while making connections to the world around them. Once they have completed their initial novel study, the groups are restructured so each book is represented. The students are then asked to use conversation cards and evidence from their texts to make connections between the stories and their own experiences. This allows students who did not read the other novels to experience it through the lens of their peers. The last part of the project is student choice book selection where they choose a different book to read based on the discussion they had with their peers. The goal is to drive curiosity, foster a love for reading and enhance opportunities to their social emotional growth.
