Imagine you were a student that got only a few hours of sleep because your parents were fighting throughout the night? How about the student that has to help take care of his siblings because mom works third shift? How about the student who lost her father to a heart attack and worries the same might happen to other family members? These students need help to get through the day and concentrate. Whether it be ADHD, anxiety or just for focus, these students need help through the use of one simple tool. I am a school counselor at a school in Lafayette, Indiana with close to 1,100 students for grades 5th and 6th. Over 70% of our students are on free and reduced lunches. Many of the backgrounds of our students are heartbreaking as they have a lot of stressors in their home lives. These students can have more success at school through the use of a wobbly stool. The students with the highest needs in these areas will be given a wobbly stool to use in the classroom. Right now, we are asking for four of these to use throughout the building. The Harvard Medical School has found that the wobbly stools send signals to the brain to allow their minds to focus easier. The student’s subconscious is focusing on their wobbling and balance and that directly influences how their mind focuses. The student is engaged in enough physical activity to engage their mind better and the child avoids excessive movement or distracting movements. This helps the student focus on learning and not on that ADHD, anxiety, or any other stressors that might come up. With your donation some of our students can learn to rock, wobble and learn their way through our classes.
