Students will use these supplies throughout the year to sketch, plan and take notes. The first semester especially is very heavy on sketching and drawing because I believe that drawing is the language for Visual Art. In order for us to have a conversation about Art, we must understand the language of Visual Art first. Our year usually starts with students drawing croquis of their peers-with their peers getting up out of their chairs and posing. Other students are actively sketching the timed poses that go very quickly! Ten seconds, twenty seconds, a minute go by. The emphasis is on observation in my course. Students figure this out pretty quickly. We follow up with more extended drawing activities as the year progresses, such as drawing still lifes. I have purchased many sketchbooks over the years to give to students who struggle to afford these basic art supplies.
