I am a first year teacher in Tuluksak, Alaska where many of my students struggle to find meaning and purpose behind coming to school. There is a 30% attendance rate and many high school students will not graduate. I have a vision to make English class relevant and engaging to my students, focus on building relationships, and creating a welcoming environment in my classroom. For four months out of the year in Alaska, there is minimal daylight. Having extra light in the classroom will help the students be awake, alert, and ready to learn. It will also help by creating a comfortable atmosphere for the students. Many of the students come to school hungry, so having food is an important component to helping them focus and feel like they are provided for at school. I will send snacks home with the students at the end of the day and before after school activities.
