These books will be used to help students develop an in-depth engagement and understanding of existentialist ideas. While we have been using smaller excerpts from philosophical writings throughout the semester, I am hoping to allow the students to pick a complete philosophy book to read during the last month of the semester. Most of the students have expressed an interest in existentialist thought (especially Sartre, Nietzsche, and Schopenhauer), and I hope to provide them with a variety of texts from the major existentialist writers. These books will allow the students to choose from a variety of texts for their final philosophy project. Reading a complete work will help them to see the authors' views in their entirety, rather than just a a small excerpt; it will help the students to develop their reading skills further; and it will help them to engage with new ideas and develop their own worldview. These skills will help them to productively engage with a democratic society and to live meaningful lives.
