I want my students to be able to look at the themes of the American Dream through eyes like theirs. I am asking for a class set of The Sun is Also a Star, a novel will provide students a different way to look at the theme of the American Dream and family. Students will get to relate to the experiences of the main characters in this novel. As a majority of my students are students of color, I think it's very important for them to not be hammered in the old ideas of what the American Dream was, as it was never obtainable for most people. I want them to be able to analyze and deep dive into if this idea is something we should even still be holding in ourselves as we navigate this world. I want students to see themselves reflected in the stories they read. If students get to see themselves in written work, maybe they won't feel so alone. I am also asking for a bookcase to store the new books.
